What is implantology?
The Implantology It is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the restoration of lost teeth through dental implants. These implants are small titanium devices that are placed in the maxillary or mandibular bone, acting as artificial roots to support dental prostheses, such as crowns, bridges or dentures.
Dental implant placement is a carefully planned process by a dental surgery specialist. Following a thorough evaluation, which may include x-rays, computed axial tomography (CT) and digital scans, the implant is inserted into the bone. A healing period is allowed for the implant to fully integrate with the bone, in a process called osseointegration. Once the osseointegration is complete, a personalized dental prosthesis is placed on the implant, restoring the function and dental appearance.
Classification of dental implants
- Endo-Bone Implants: They are inserted into the mandibular bone to replace the lost dental roots, merging with the bone through osseointegration, providing a solid and durable base to support dental prostheses.
- Titanium implants: The most used, consist of a titanium structure placed on the bone.
- Zirconium implants: Made of zirconium, a ceramic material of high strength and aesthetics.
- Zygomatic implants: Used in cases of severe maxillary bone loss, they are a viable option for patients with insufficient bone in the upper jaw for conventional implants.
- Immediate loading implants: They allow the placement of the dental prosthesis immediately after insertion of the implant, reducing the waiting time to obtain a functional and aesthetic teeth.
